It happens that we sometimes wake up without having any idea of where we are, or what has happened the during our sleep. Haven’t we? This must be true because I cannot remember half of what I did in my mid-twenties. Also, what would happen if you wake up surrounded by cats with boxes on their heads in a in the desert in a Middle Eastern country and you cannot remember your name? This is how Abo Khashem sets the stage for a grand adventure.
“Abo Khashem” is first and foremost an open world comedic third-person action adventure video game developed by Moving Dimensions and published by PQube Limited. It was released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and desktop. The game is set in a fictional Arabian city. The protagonist, Abo Khashem, sets up the stage awakening up in the desert in a Middle Eastern country with amnesia and embarks on a quest to uncover the mysteries surrounding his past. It is also a light business management simulator, a dungeon crawler, a driving game, a combo-based beat-’em-up and a home decoration simulator.
The main part of the game begins with the fight against the pummelling in the street begin. The Cat Worlds is where you will spend a majority of your time, battling against numerous types of cats. There are several of these worlds and they are on a set rotation making this the best way to grind for better gear. At the end of each of these worlds is a boss fight, some more challenging than others.
This is a game that involves a range of missions, from fetch quests, to combat quests, some driving opportunities and a bit of mad property management all included together to create a complex or dynamic situation. The game is localised in English, the writing in English is not half bad and the voice acting is beyond serviceable. However, half of the charm wouldn’t be understood by someone not familiar with Saudi culture and the other half had to be rewritten to suit them. All cultural references are lost, town names were changed or anglicised for absolutely no reason. I get that a foreigner would not understand why there is a reference to Plawres Sanshiro (a mid-80s anime that is a household name among 90s Saudi kids), but it is part of the culture that the game is portraying.
